Keywords and competitors

How the keyword map groups your searches into topics and assigns each to a page, and how competitor tracking finds the searches you’re missing.

The Keyword Map shows what you rank for and what you should. Competitors shows what the sites beating you rank for and you don’t. Together they decide which pages SEOgent suggests improving and which new pages it plans.

The keyword map

The map groups the searches you care about into topics, and assigns each topic to the page that should rank for it.

It’s built from three sources:

  • Search Console: the searches you already appear for over the last 90 days, with your clicks, impressions and position
  • Keyword research: related searches and suggestions around your seed keywords, or around your top Search Console searches if you haven’t set any
  • Keywords you add yourself

SEOgent looks up each search’s monthly volume, difficulty (KD, 0 to 100) and intent. It then groups the searches by what the searcher wants, usually into 10 to 40 topics. Off-topic searches and searches for other brands are left out. The map holds up to 300 keywords, mostly from Search Console, plus any you add.

The Keyword Map: each topic, its status, the page that should rank for it, and the numbers behind it.

Each topic gets a status:

StatusMeaning
CoveredA page targets it and ranks in the top 10
Ranking weaklyIt ranks below position 10, or gets barely any impressions
Needs a pageNo page fits it. These become ideas in the Content Plan
CannibalisedTwo or more of your pages split its impressions, so neither ranks well

Click a topic to see its keywords and why it got its status. The table shows each topic’s total monthly volume, average difficulty, impressions over 90 days and your best position.

When it updates

The map is built when you finish setup, and rebuilt once a month with the weekly review. You can rebuild it any time with Rebuild keyword map, which takes a few minutes.

Adding and removing keywords

  • Add keywords takes up to 20 at a time, one per line. Put them in a topic, or let the next rebuild place them. Keywords you add stay on the map through every rebuild, and SEOgent looks up their volume and difficulty straight away.
  • To remove a keyword, click its ×. It won’t come back from Search Console or keyword research.

Seed keywords and country

Settings → Sites → Keywords & targets holds your seed keywords, one per line. Keyword research starts from the first ten.

Your country and language, under Settings → Sites → General, decide where search volumes, rankings and competitor research are looked up. Search Console and analytics always cover every country.

Competitors

Add the sites that win the searches you want. These aren’t always your business rivals: review sites, directories and big publishers often win the searches that matter. You can pick up to five during setup and add more later under Competitors with Add competitor.

Every Sunday SEOgent pulls the searches each competitor ranks for in Google’s top 20, along with your own rankings. You can pull them sooner with Pull rankings. Each competitor’s card shows how many searches it wins that you don’t, how many it has in the top 20, and its estimated monthly visits from search.

Keyword gaps

The gaps table lists searches where competitors beat you:

  • You don’t rank: a competitor ranks and you don’t appear at all
  • Behind: you rank, but below the top 10 and below the best competitor

Each gap shows its volume, difficulty, which competitors rank and where, your position, and a score. The score weighs volume, how easy the search is (100 minus KD), intent (searches that lead to buying count 1.5×) and how many competitors rank for it. Gaps are sorted by score, so the best opportunities come first.

Use the filters to hide searches for competitors’ own brand names (on by default), or show only easy searches (KD 30 or below). Plan article turns a gap into an idea in the Content Plan, aimed at exactly that search.

Open a competitor to see every search it ranks for, which of its pages ranks, and whether you’re ahead, behind or missing.
